Why Are There So Many Homeless Pets?

The West Georgia Animal Welfare League started out a group of volunteers at the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter in 2004 and we recently incorporated as a non-profit group in April 2006 so we can continue to grow and meet the needs of the shelter and the community. We operate our own licensed non-profit Pet Adoption Center in Douglas County which offers fully vetted adoptable pets and pet supplies.

We have a great relationship with the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter's staff and together we strive to create new programs to bring people and pets together. Over the last two years our volunteers and the county shelter staff have worked together to make great improvements which have drastically raised the adoption rate and lowered the euthanasia rate in Douglas County.

By working together, the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter now has one of the highest adoption rates in the Atlanta area!

Volunteering is very rewarding!

It's very hard work getting the pets ready for their photographs, but they repay the volunteers with a lot of kisses and affection!

Some of the ways we assist the County shelters...

We like to take in pets from local Animal Control facilities who need a little bit of help and time to get adopted. This includes pregnant and nursing pets, older pets and pets who need medical attention.

We provide information about free and low-cost spay neuter programs in the Atlanta area. We answer questions about pet care and non-profit programs and assist people in placing homeless pets.

We started a spay/neuter fund and a LifeSaver Fund in coordination with the Atlanta Animal Alliance. We have spayed and neutered many out-of-time shelter pets and gotten them on to new lives with wonderful families!

We have an inkjet and laser cartridge recycling program to raise money for our spay/neuter fund.

How can you help?

We have many wonderful plans to help meet the county's petowner needs. Our Adoption Center can always use help, so please stop by to give a hand, become a member, or make a donation. We can help so many pets by working together!

We have fosterhomes for nursing moms and litters and we welcome new fosterhomes.

A Second Chance
Many of our adopters send us photos and e-mails of their pets enjoying their new start in life. While it's always hard for the fostermoms to say good-bye to a sweet pet they've cared for in our foster program, It's also a happy feeling to know that the pets are loved by their new families!

Providing Information To The Community

We talk to many Animal lovers in Douglas County and help them find solutions to their unique issues. We provide County Animal Shelter Information and maps showing how to get to the shelter. We also provide useful information about rabies control, controlling and caring for feral cats, chaining pets, photos and descriptions of pets currently for adoption at the shelter, and much more useful information.

Unwanted or unexpected litters are a common pet owner issue and we talk to people about low-cost spay/neuter clinics and find the right one for them. We recommend CatSnip, SANTA and the West Mobile Vet Clinic.
